Paul SougyThe heart and circulation, 1840-50s. Wall hanging scientific pull down charts for French schools.Paul Sougy’s work with Dr. Louis Thomas Jérôme Auzoux (1797-1880) text’s influenced a generation of French children. What we know of him, though, is not all that much.Dr Auzouz’s work continues to be celebrated. His 3D papier mâché models of plants have been digitised and exhibited by l’Ecole Supérieure du Professorat et de l’Education (School for Teaching and Education); his papier-mâché models showing the inner workings of the human body and insects are on display at the Whipple Museum in Cambridge, UK. But Paul Sougy is remembered in a humdrum road named after him in his native Orleans and the library at Artois University features a large collection of his work. But of the man, little has been noted.A flea market find by a friend spurred Maria Popova to rediscover and restore Paul Sougy’s mid-century educational illustrations of plants, animals, and the human body. The restored illustrations are available as prints. A portion of the proceeds go to benefit The Nature Conservancy.Via: BrainPickings, Kottke, University of Artois -- source link
