thisfalconwhite:On this day in history…25 July 1603: James VI of Scotland is crowned King James I of England.On 5 April 1603, nearly two weeks after the death of Elizabeth I, James VI left Edinburgh for London, where he had already been proclaimed King of England. James was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, the great-great grandson of Henry VII, and, therefore, Elizabeth’s most legitimate Protestant heir. Robert Cecil, Earl of Salisbury - one of Elizabeth’s most influential counselors - had been in correspondence with James for years, preparing the way for a smooth succession. Cecil’s efforts paid off, for James succeeded to the throne without challenge. James’s coronation took place on 25 July 1603, thereby uniting the thrones of England and Scotland under the Stuart dynasty. -- source link
