These paper mache Nativity figures, which date to the late 19th or early 20th century, were made in Germany. Nativity scenes were very popular in Pennsylvania German communities. The practice had its origin in the Moravian custom of “putz” building. The term putz comes from a German word meaning “to decorate,” and refers to a traditional Moravian landscaped Nativity scene. The landscape is usually embellished with natural materials such as moss, wood and stones. The Moravian Church is active in Bethlehem, Nazareth, Lititz, and other locations in Pennsylvania. This year Glencairn is offering two Christmas exhibitions: “Christmas in Pennsylvania” and "World Nativities.” And don’t miss our popular "Christmas in the Castle” tour (reservations strongly recommended for this tour, as space is limited). http://ow.ly/Ulflm More about “Christmas in Pennsylvania” here: http://ow.ly/GN4d30705qV -- source link
