Letting them be released by the wind to the universe.In Scotland we have Clootie Trees and Clootie Wells which go back to at least the early medieval/late antique period and are almost certainly a Christianised pre-Christian* practice. There’s usually a tree next to a well though sometimes you get one or the other and you tie an offering made of cloth to the tree (dipped in the well first if there is one) or somewhere on the well if there is no tree. Depending on the mythos around the site the offering is either a piece of sympathetic magic where the cloth represents the problem and its rotting away its resolution, and so its often some rather unpleasant scrap, or the cloth is an offering to the saint/spirit/divinity and so should be a nice one. They’re also related to faerie trees like the one on Teamhair Hill, where people tie all sorts of things like hair and beaded jewellery as well as ribbons as prayer offerings, and to the Greek Orthodox practise of doing the same at saints hermitages.*I use pre-Christian instead of Pagan because of issues with the term Pagan in historical contexts, particularly outside of the Roman Empire.
