absolvd:Chris MusgraveMemory and Oblivion, 2007 (detail)Videos shot from the reflections on the surface of the Danube in Vienna invoke a sense of flow that induces reflection and causes perceptual motion after-effects. The heterodyning, rhythmic sounds compliment the effect of the motion. Memory and Oblivion considers the Danube as the longest river in the EU and a frontier of Roman Empire. The name of the piece is derived from the mythological rivers Mnemosyne and Lethe. Mythic lore states that drinking from the river of Lethe causes forgetfulness or oblivion and erasure of a previous life’s memories. It is also said that if one drinks from both the Lethe and Mnemosyne (memory) omniscience may be attained. -- source link
