(prt 1)“Who are you writing a postcard to?”“Jealous, John?”“Baffled, Alice, because that postcard is mostly symbols.”“Everything is symbols, you know that. I had a puppy, too, for some months. Well, rather more a three legged dog.”“You made a friend?”“I was quite as surprised as you, to be honest. We met under very odd circumstances, he helped me with some odd jobs, I helped him with personal hygiene, among other things.”“Will I ever meet him?”“If you’re in America and wish to go to the worst pub in the world, perhaps.”“What’s he like, your friend?”“You are entertained by this, aren’t you? He is singularly damaged, quite quite mad, easy to lead but hard to direct, with occasional but quite resplendent flashes of brilliance. We passed as siblings more than once - he enjoyed putting on accents terribly.”“Why did you leave? Is he in jail or something?”“Oh John, of course not. Not when I left him at any rate. He had an entirely terrible group of friends, dependent on him for their very sanity, whom I offered to kill, or at least educate, but he told me there’d be no point, and we amicably parted ways. I’d like to visit him again some day. He played Bach rather well, with some coaching. Perhaps we should visit America.”“Yeah, maybe. I’d like to meet anyone who could become your friend.”(go to prt 2) -- source link
