medievalpoc:Fireplace HangingSouth Germany (1571)Okay so this thing is…just so weird looking. I can’t even figure out what the theme is supposed to be. It’s a fireplace hanging, which is probably why it’s so beat-up looking but yeah. It’s creepy and weird, and I can’t figure out if these are supposed to be “ethnographic types”, or some kind of biblical themed vignettes (considering the guy with the scimitar and the baby, it implies the Massacre of the Innocents but…?), or something else entirely.By the way, this is a textile. The figures um, appear to be made out of some kind of sculpted…felt? I swear to you I have definitely seen some ugly art in my time, but this is impressively grotesque. I promise you that the closer you look, the worse it gets:This looks like it was made out of cat hairballs and venial sins. I don’t even know what to tell you other than I’ve been looking at this for more than 20 minutes and I can’t stop laughing. Really? you might say. It’s not THAT funny, you might protest. In that case, i rebut you thusly:Here’s a link to the whole thing in hi res, courtesy of supernaut.info. Thank you for blessing the world with such impressive images of this…thing. -- source link
