everythingieverloved:Today in history, June 3rd, 1865, George V was born to Edward VII and Alexandra of Denmark. As was the second son of the pair, he was third in line to the throne after his father, his grandmother, Queen Victoria, still being alive at the time of his birth, and his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor, so there was little expectation that he would one day be king. His parents had intended for him to serve in the navy, and indeed he did for many years until in January 1892, his elder brother died of pneumonia, making George second in line to the throne and ending his career in the navy. He married his late brother’s betrothed, Mary of Teck, and the pair would remain devoted to each other through their lives. In January of 1901, George became the Prince of Wales upon the death of Queen Victoria, and in May of 1910, after the passing of his father, he became King George V of Great Britain, Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India. -- source link
