sainterly:My dad bought me this book on medieval calligraphy from a second hand bookshop today as an early birthday present. The owner was an old man with no hands (but two stiff prosthetics, like mannequin hands) who left the shop after hearing a commotion outside, and came back in spitting with rage because apparently a group of kids had been throwing glass bottles at a homeless man. He had chased them off, and after coming back in heabruptly left again to confront two evangelical Christians who were posted across the street handing out flyers, angry that they, of all people, didn’t step in to help the man who was being attacked. When we went to pay for the book he insisted, insisted, that we both take a piece of fruit from the crate on the counter. “Get a book, get a piece of fruit; get your vitamins” is what he said. -- source link
