upennmanuscripts:Theorica motuum… volvelle on Page 8 of LJS 64, a manuscript copy of Illustrations to Georg von Peurbach’s Novae theoricae planetarum.Caption in Latin: Theorica motuum et orbium sphere solis. My translation: “Theory of the motions and of the spheres of the sun.”Here I’m not sure what to do with sphere. (I’ve translated orbium as “spheres” because that’s how I’ve translated that word in previous captions, which is now a bit confusing) It’s not in Perseus and Wiktionary only traces it to Old French, where is means “sphere” (which I figured). I’m just not sure where it fits in the context of this phrase. That said, I love this volvelle! I love the black middle layer, and the way it peeks through the cut-out in the top layer. I also love that the rotation point of the top layer is slightly off from the bottom two layers, so it dances around the black background as it moves. I know this is designed to illustrate a scientific theory, but I think it’s beautiful and I could watch this spin for hours. Here’s another gif of a volvelle from LJS 64, which was featured on Monday. We’ll be posting more volvelles over the course of the week. -- source link
