Eddying windsSnapped by NASA’s TERRA satellite off the coast of Portugal, this wonderful spiral of cloud was created by cyclonic (ie counterclockwise) rotation of a mass of air during a summer low pressure event, which usually results in little rain. The eddy is formed of mixed airs, some hot, dry and cloud free from over the baking Iberian Peninsula (at the time enduring a 40 Celsius heatwave) and some cool and moist from the ocean, resulting in the pattern of organic energy displayed in the image. The eddying effect was amplified by the contact between sea and land and the shape of the coast as well as by the contrast between the properties of the different masses of air.LozImage credit: NASAhttps://go.nasa.gov/2tZ7dmQ -- source link
