(x)watercolor on paper4 ¾ x 3 ¼Marie was 14 years old when she painted this scene of the Ipatiev Monastery in the medieval city of Kostroma on the Volga when she visited with her family during a cruise in the summer of 1913 in connection with the tercentenary celebrations fo the Romanov dynasty. It was at the Ipatiev Monastery in 1613 that young Michael Romanov learned of his election as tsar, which was the beginning of the 300 year old dynasty. Ironically, the dynasty would end at the Ipatiev House, of the same name, in Ekaterinburg in 1918, with the murder of Nicholas II and his family along with their loyal attendants.
