Allied forces were shocked to encounter large numbers of Asians in German uniform in Normandy. Most of these Asian volunteers had been “conscripted” into the Red Army in the early days of the war, were taken prisoner by the Germans in the battles of 1941-1942, and later gained their freedom by agreeing to join foreign legions representing their homelands under German command. In 1945 there were over 200,000 Asians enlisted in the German army. -- source link
