dragonageconfessions:CONFESSION: I will never understand why either of the Hawke siblings are killed off at the beginning of the game. Like, oh no, the characters we’ve spent maybe all of five minutes with so far are going to become an ogre’s chewtoy, woe is the player. Its doubly insulting when you realize they just fridge Leandra in Act 2, so why not just off her since she never adds anything besides her death? And I don’t buy that ‘we wanted to balance out the party’ excuse- especially if you have Rogue Hawke and SebastianI see OP’s point about Bethany/Carver, but I don’t think the idea of Leandra getting “fridged” is really accurate. “Fridging” is when a female character is killed off at the very beginning of the narrative, sometimes even before, to give the male protagonist an angsty backstory. She usually has no personality/backstory/narrative purpose other than manpain. Leandra, on the other hand, is around for half the game. She interacts with Hawke, with Bethany/Carver, and with her brother. She has some narrative agency in terms of how she handles herself in Kirkwall, and you have some sense of her relationship with Hawke. She is an established character. I still don’t like the way she dies, and there’s certainly an argument to be made there about how it was handled, but I don’t think you can call it fridging by virtue of the fact that, as you pointed out, it happens in Act II. (If Bethany dies at the beginning, could you argue that she’s fridged? Yeah, very possibly, depending on how you play it.) -- source link
