dominusvenustas:Pontormo, Annunciation, c.1527-28Once you have seen this fresco in the Capponi Chapel of Santa Felicita in Florence, there is one thing that strikes you most and stays with you for all time. It is the extraordinarily wonderful colours of the Archangel Gabriel. And the way that light shines onto the figure, making the angel glow in the changing natural light of the space. It is intense and beautifully described. I could gaze at it for hours. Jacopo Pontormo was as Vasari describes him ‘…a modest person, who spoke of everyone honourably and in the way to be expected of a good-mannered and virtuous craftsman, such as he…’He was also quite eccentric as he grew older, and was a solitary figure. He rarely saw anyone except a chosen few including Bronzino whom he loved dearly for he had trained him in his studio. ‘Sometimes when he was at work, he began to think so deeply about what he wanted to do, that he would leave without having done anything else all day except stand in deep thought’ - VasariA true painter of the fifteenth century. His contributions are in the field of Mannerism, and in forging a way forward after the idealistic perfection of Michelangelo. His unique and truly extraordinary use of colour is how I always remember him. It is truly something to behold. Bravissimo caro Jacopo. -- source link
