What the NGA page doesn’t show, but which you do see in real life (and which I attempted to capture) is that the painting is quite large and hung above viewer eye-line so it’s not a direct level gaze: his eyes are soft and slightly lowered despite the head tilt. Combined with the the dressing grown and unbuttoned britches, (and more than a decade of fandom), the effect is more than “captivating expression” and more like “where’s the fic?” (or maybe “where’s one for mine?” and he’s not even as good looking as the St. Sebastians)You do imagine that the theme might’ve gone alone the lines that musical/artistic inspiration interrupted sleep- then again, it’s difficult to parse that expression other than “Come with me”. -- source link
