[”someone else on this hell platform said it better than me, but “don’t speak ill of the dead” is for your aunt that struggled with alcoholism, not someone who used their considerable political power to make life worse for everyone else”]There are a few reasons not to speak ill of the Dead.On the most practical and also personal level, you don’t speak ill of the Dead where those who loved them can hear you because it can hurt the living.Again practically, you don’t speak ill of the Dead because it can make you look petty and assholish. You don’t speak ill of the Dead whom you knew because when you’re in mourning, too, it can help you to remember the better things rather than the worse ones. (Or it may not, but that’s another matter.)If you believe in the spirit remaining after death, then you don’t speak ill of the Dead because they might hear you and be upset, and maybe respond badly and do you harm.But.BUT.There are many, many more reasons to speak truth of the Dead, even if that truth is ugly. Especially if that truth is ugly.Maybe you still shouldn’t do it in front of those who are in mourning for someone they knew and loved (but then again, maybe there are times when you should). But anyone who thinks you’re petty for speaking the truth of someone who did great wrongs because they are dead? That person is the asshole. If you personally knew the person who is dead, and they wronged you greatly, then perhaps it is best for you to remember the bad, and speak of it, and so cleanse yourself of it. And if you did not know them personally and they harmed you greatly, then definitely raise your voice in truth. And if the spirit of someone who is dead and who did great wrong in life hears you, then let them also hear many other voices, so that they can do no wrong against all of them, and so that they are ashamed of what they did in life. Let them hear the truth. All of which is to say, yes, that. -- source link
