redgoldsparks:Favorite Podcasts of 2021 by Maia KobabeThese are the four podcasts I listened to the most in 2021, two old favorites and two new discoveries! Fic Clique is a show hosted by three friends, Nicole, Brenna, and Reid, who each bring one fanfiction to discuss in each episode. Sometimes they pick a theme- all stories exploring a single trope, for example, but generally it’s just three stories they really loved and want to talk about with joyful enthusiasm. Sometimes I try to read along and be familiar with the stories before I dive into an episode; other times I just listen cold and both ways are equally entertaining. I love the curiosity, delight, and generous spirit the hosts bring to these conversations as well as the deep fandom knowledge, wacky introduction games, and increasingly ridiculous segment transitions. I highly recommend this show to anyone in fandom, and if you are not in fandom, this would be a good way to dip your toes in! This podcast does not need to be listened to in consecutive order; you can begin at the first episode, or the most recent, or skip around in the middle. The hosts themselves have recommended episode #5 as a good starting point. They are somewhat active here on tumblr @ficclique; more regularly found on twitter. City of Ghosts is a new full-scripted and full-cast audio drama I got into this fall! It’s set in New York City and the main character is El, an “information broker” aka unlicensed PI who can hear voices. She’s been taking medication to suppress them, but then starts to realize that the voices are of the dead, and sometimes they can offer her information as she tries to solve crimes. Normally she investigates minor scandals, affairs, bribery, etc, but when she is hired to investigate the murder of a journalist she quickly ends up much deeper into a city-wide corruption plot than she had ever expected. This show is beautifully sound-edited. I felt like I was listening from an audio-recorded tucked into El’s pocket, hearing all of the footsteps, traffic sounds, city chatter, and ghosts voices that she heard. The first season is all out now, 10 episodes, each between 30-45 minutes long. I am very hopeful that there will be a season 2! It’s a little spooky but not too scary for me, a known scardey-cat. I do recommend listening at night when you are the only person awake in your house, it really adds to the experience~ You can find the show on twitter and instagram. Witch Please is one of my returning, and eternal, favorites. In their initial run, Canadian feminist literary professors Hannah McGregor and Marcelle Kosman read one Harry Potter book or watched one Harry Potter movie per episode. Unsurprisingly they ran out of material, and after some detours in the extended universe, they went on hiatus. Despite the short run, this initial podcast impacted how I think about the world more than any single other thing outside of grad school. There are many episode I have listened to two or three times, and each time gain new insight. So you will probably be able to imagine how THRILLED I was when they announced a new series! It’s the same two hosts, and they are still talking about Harry Potter, but now they are making 5 or 6 episodes about each book looking through different critical lenses. I am AMAZED AND DELIGHTED by how they constantly bring new insight and research to bare on a subject I have thought about so much. This is the balm to my soul after the horrifying descent of JKR into vocal, toxic anti-Trans rhetoric. So far they have examined the series through academic disciplines such as queer theory, animal studies, Orientalism, PTSD/trauma theory, archival studies, pedagogy, critical race theory, disability, celebrity, the prison industrial complex, and more. Find them actively engaging on twitter, patreon, and instagram. Fansplaining is the podcast I have been continuously listening to longer than any other. Hosts Elizabeth Minkel and Flourish Klink release bi-monthly episodes and patreon special episodes on pan-fandom topics like fandom in academia, how the pandemic has impacted fans and fan activities, racism in fandom, monetization, copyright concerns and more. They also do interview episodes- some of the recent ones have included fic and recently published author Freya Marske, FIYAH magazine and con founder Brent Lambert, romance and tie-novelist Gwenda Bond, and podcaster/writer Nichole Perkins. I am always drawn into the thoughtful and nuanced conversations on this show, which frequently point me in the direction of books or other podcasts I might not otherwise have come across. This podcast is active here on tumblr @fansplaining and well as twitter, patreon and insta. -- source link
