Sea Stacks in OregonSea stacks are stranded pillars of rock, isolated from their coastline brethren. Headlands that jut outwards over an open body of water leave themselves prone to erosion. Over long periods of time water and wind wear down the land formation creating a cave, which will slowly extend upwards to form an arch. Eventually the top of the arch erodes and collapses leaving an isolated pillar (sea stack.) Sea stacks are usually composed of rocks that are more resistant to erosion. The rocks in the picture above are comprised of sedimentary sandstone, chert layers derived from silica-rich sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone, blocks of greenstone and blueschist rocks formed from metamorphism of igneous rocks.http://bit.ly/1IlWrfahttp://bit.ly/1Cf8tySKKSPhoto Courtesy of Marli Miller -- source link
