medievaltwinks:“Gwenhwyfar, daughter of Ogrfan Gawr,Bad when little, worse when great.”- Welsh folk sayingGuinevere probably takes the cake as the most vilified female character in English literature. Her most defining characteristic is her adultery, not only with Lancelot but also with Mordred, leading to King Arthur’s demise in the Battle of Camlann. This could be because of the nature of literacy during the time the Arthurian legends were written, seeing as all male characters were–regardless of fault–celebrated in these texts.Which is why her characterisation in BBC Merlin is something I can never really let go of. Regardless of how simplistic her role ended up being, the fact that she was given more than the role of a wayward adultress gave readers and audiences more insights into her character and psyche than Tennyson or Monmouth or Mallory had ever done. The fact that she ended up being the Queen and Ruler of Camelot after Arthur’s death is something that I wish I’d seen more of in the show or even in some Arthurian literature. So yeah. I figured Gwen would make for an awesome army commander after Arthur’s death, leading Camelot to its Golden Days with Merlin, Sir Percival, and Sir Leon helping out until she dies of old age. She’s become successful in leading the Camelot forces against the Mercians, Saxons, and Picts, expanding the kingdom’s territory beyond the Northern Borders and Southern Isles.Give me more of Battle Commander and All Around BAMF!Queen Guinevere, please! -- source link
