Behind SeljalandsfossThis photograph comes from one of the many famous locations for waterfalls on the island of Iceland. The waterfall in front of you is Seljalandsfoss; you should already be able to make out one of its most distinctive features, the large cave behind it.Seljalandsfoss is located on the Icelandic coastal plain south of Reykjavik. The waterfall cascades over a cliff about 60 meters in height. The cliff itself is described as being an ancient sea cliff; cut by erosion of the ocean when water levels were higher worldwide during one of the previous inter-glacials.Sea cliffs are a common feature; when the ocean stays in a specific elevation relative to an island for a long period of time, it will wear away at the rocks, creating a sharp sea cliff. Here, the hard basaltic rocks of Iceland were eroded even more at the point where the water met the cliff, creating the cave behind this spot.
