fuckyeaharchaeology:Thousands of Aboriginal Artifacts uncovered in Sydney Construction SiteA large Aboriginal site has been uncovered in a construction site in Randwick for Sydney’s new light rail line. The site has thelargest recent discoveries of indigenous artifacts in the city to date - about 20,000 artifacts have already been recovered within an 100 square meter area. Archaeologists predict that the site could yield an additional 30,000 more. Archaeologists believe the site was once of great significance to the indigenous population of Australia due to the high concentration of artifacts. Additionally much of the cultural material found of the site originated north of Sydney in the Lower Hunter Valley. Many of the tools, such as spearheads, have never been seen before in the Sydney area. The site is believed to demonstrate a trading route, or that the groups out of the Hunter Valley were working with the groups in Sydney.Due to the cultural significance of the site, archaeologists and Aboriginal groups have called for the government to stop construction of the rail line so that more archaeological work can be done. Unfortunately The DOT for NSW has acknowledged the significance of the find but has not said if it would comply with the request to stop work on a transport project. It is believed that thousands of artifacts have already been destroyed due to heavy machine construction. According to archaeologist David Shoebridge:“It’s downright criminal that what may well be one of the most important recent heritage finds is being literally torn up without even the most rudimentary consideration.”Aboriginal groups are also unhappy with the government’s lack of cooperation in preserving to site. According to Durag Elder, UncleDes Dyer: “As an elder I get annoyed because I can’t teach what I’m supposed to. The role of an elder is to pass down to people things about our culture - but how can I when I can’t take people to places where they learn it?“ -- source link
