Henrietta Maria and King Charles I with their two eldest surviving sons, Charles, Prince of Wales, and James, Duke of York, painted by Anthony Van Dyck, 1633.Henrietta married Charles by proxy on 11 May 1625, shortly after his accession to the throne. They married in person a month later at St. Augustine’s Church, Canterbury on 13 June 1625. Their relationship was initially frigid and argumentative, and Henrietta took an immediate dislike to The Duke of Buckingham, the King’s favorite. In August 1628, however, Buckingham was assassinated, leaving a gap at the royal court. Henrietta’s relationship with Charles promptly began to improve and the two forged deep bonds of love and affection.Henrietta’s Catholic beliefs, which came with her from France, made her unpopular among the English. While Charles liked to call Henrietta Maria simply “Maria,” the English people called her “Queen Mary,” alluding to Charles’ Catholic grandmother. Henrietta Maria was unapologetic about her Catholicism. She obstructed government plans to convert the oldest sons of Catholic families to Protestantism and facilitated Catholic marriages, criminal offenses at the time. -- source link
