1979-1990 Anime PrimerGunbuster (1988)In the near future, mankind is under attack by insectoid aliens. While they are still light years from Earth, measures are being taken to prevent them from ever reaching it via the development of combat robots. Among the youth being trained to pilot these robots is Noriko Takaya, a cheerful but insecure girl whose father was among the first casualties of the war. The enigmatic Coach Ota sees her potential, and has decided that she and her revered onee-sama Kazumi Amano are the only ones fit to pilot the ultimate fighting machine known as the Gunbuster. While Gainax’s previous release Royal Space Force: Wings of the Honnêamise was more of an art house flick, Gunbuster is a crowd-pleasing OVA that features everything that was popular at the time: giant mecha, kaiju-esque aliens, an intricate sci-fi setting and pretty girls in absurd battle leotards. The story itself is inspired by the classic shoujo manga Aim for the Ace!, the movie Top Gun and a myriad of super robot anime. That’s not to say there’s nothing original about Gunbuster; first-time director Hideaki Anno (Evangelion) imparts enough of his signature style to make the series defining in its own right. Over-the-top and brimming with energy, Gunbuster was a great success for Gainax and set the stage for their pioneering work in the 90s. -- source link
