madamelamarquys:Today in history - The death of Sophia PalaiologinaZoe (later Sophia) was the daughter of Thomas Palaiologos and his wife Catherine Zaccaria. Through her father she was the niece of the last Roman/Byzantine emperor Constantine IX. After the conquest of Constantinopole (later Istanbul) and the attacks on her father’s despot, Morea (Peloponnysos) she was sent to Corfu with her siblings and mother in 1460. Three years later she and her siblings were called to Rome and were declared the heirs to their fallen dynasty.Zoe married the Grand Prince of Moscow Ivan III in 1472 after she was baptized again and changed her name to Sophia. The marriage produced around eight children among them Vasili III the father of the first Thar of Russia. Sophia died on 7 April 1503, two years before her husband. She was burried in the crypt of the Ascension Convent in Kremlin next to Ivan’s first wife, Maria of Tver. -- source link
