Long rivers will move water through regions with differing soils, erode it, and assimilate it into its flow. This sediment and mineral transport will the ecology down river, and transform the environment. The geology of… North Carolina for example, demonstrates these processes.North Carolina is in the southeastern coast of the United States and is divided into two major regions; the coastal pain, and the piedmont. Rivers that travel within the coastal plain are known as blackwater rivers, as they carry dark, organic acids (mostly tannins) of the coastal swamps and pocosins. Rivers that originate in the mountains or piedmont are referred to as redwater rivers, as they carry red clays into the coastal blackwater bottomlands. Blackwater sites tend to be dominated by pondcypress (Taxodium distichum var. imbricarium), while redwater sites are dominated by baldcypress (Taxodium distichum var. distichum). The redwater systems bring higher overall productivity to the regions through which they flow.
