Semele:In Greek myth, the mortal mother of Dionysus. She conceived the god of wine in an affair with Zeus. However, Hera found out about her husband’s adultery. As is usual for Hera, she blamed Zeus’s paramour. Disguising herself, she convinced Semele to ask Zeus for a boon: viewing her lover in his divine form. Bound by his promise, Zeus was forced to comply, and the sight of one of the gods undisguised caused Semele to be consumed in fire. Zeus rescued the infant Dionysus before he could burn, and in some accounts sewed the baby into his thigh. Despite being born mortal, Semele eventually attained a divine position on Mount Olympus. As an adult, Dionysus brought her from the realm of Hades. After her rescue she was known as Semele Thyone or simply Thyone, goddess of the frenzy.ETA: you can find prints of this commissioned painting here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/492310340/semele-mother-of-dionysus-85x11-open -- source link
