fyeaheasterneurope:King Jadwiga of Poland (1373-1399)How unusual was it for a women to be a ruler in 14th century Europe? So unusual that she took the title of king - a queen would have inherently been a consort to a king, and Jadwiga was the ruler of Poland in her own right.Jadwiga died at a young age, following complications from childbirth, but not before she led Poland in two military campaigns, ran her own diplomacy with foreign powers, and sponsored projects in arts and education. This included selling her jewelry to pay for a renovation and relaunching of Krakow Academy, today’s Jagiellonian University, the oldest university in Poland (and one of the oldest in the world). She was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1997.Thanks to niczka for suggesting King Jadwiga as a topic! -- source link
