These knobs (there is another one on the smaller heater located on the same wall) must have been what the hostel was referring to when they advertised that I would be able to control the heat in my room. Not that they actually work, mind you. A couple weeks ago I noticed that my room was very warm when I came in at night, almost unbearably so. The hostel has turned on the heat too early in my opinion - I don’t think that it’s been lower than 8*C at night (though some parts of the country, particularly on the South Island, had frost last night, and the Southern Alps have already seen about 4cm of snow), and regularly hovers around 15*C during the day. I have attempted to move the knobs into an “off” position (or at least to a “lower than stifling” position) to no avail. It just seems to stay at the same constant temperature. I still have my window open constantly, mainly to prevent the room from getting too stuffy. One of the other women on my side of the building also says that her room is too hot, but she apparently talked to a neighbour across the hall, who says that her room is too cold. We just can’t win. It’s not like I have great sun exposure in the room, either. It may be a heating problem. -- source link
