October 2015 - Largest Red Oak* TreeIt’s gorgeous and HUGE and it hums. I absolutely love it.Haven’t figured out the proper name for this tree yet, but it’s by far the largest tree in our forest. Although size doesn’t necessarily indicate age, we suspect it is also our oldest tree. The further east one goes on the property, the steeper and more difficult it is to traverse (the section at the eastern edge requires rock climbing - all 4 limbs, if you have ‘em). We think this inaccessibility protected the tree, back from when this whole region was logged. Where it is located, we also have more native species in the understory. My arms reach halfway around the trunk.*Northern Red Oak / Quercus rubra ID is tentative, especially given the large diameter of the trunk, but it’s definitely an oak though! -- source link
