gffa:gffa:Light of the Jedi | by Charles SouleHOLY CRAP, THIS ENTIRE SCENE. I HAVE NEVER READ ANYTHING AS HARDCORE AS THIS:“I believe that the Jedi should, at all times, present to the many peoples of the galaxy a way of life centered on peace. We must show them the way. The Republic is uniquely receptive to such an idea at this moment.”“Yes, but we are guardians of two ideals, are we not?” said Yarael Poof. “Sometimes, unfortunately, they come into conflict. We must always strive for peace, but also justice. Peace without justice is flawed, hollow at its core. It is the peace provided by tyranny.”PEACE WITHOUT JUSTICE IS FLAWED, HOLLOW AT ITS CORE. IT IS THE PEACE PROVIDED BY TYRANNY.ALL RIGHT TIME TO YELL ABOUT THIS PROPERLY. The reason I wrote this post first was to show that the bigger structure of “connecting to the context of the prequels/other parts of Star Wars” so that when I yell about this scene specifically, it shows that this is part of a bigger pattern and I’m not just a prequels gremlin always trying to find connections to my faves. I mean, I am still a prequels gremlin, but ALSO I’M RIGHT.This scene is so fantastic because you can’t not immediately ping on how this is a deep, deep parallel to the prequels’ Jedi’s dilemma–there’s a war that’s about to break out, do they fight in it or do they stay out of it? The Jedi Council makes their case, both sides have their say, and ultimately they decide that they cannot stand by while people are getting murdered. You can’t not immediately ping on how the Nihil are responsible for helping to kill billions, you can’t not ping on how “the Jedi are not a military force” or “There have been times in our history when the Order was reduced to but a handful of members.”, you can’t not ping on how two of the Jedi that argue in favor of how they can’t do nothing are Yarael Poof and Oppo Rancisis–two Jedi who are still on the Council as of The Phantom Menace. THOSE ARE PREQUEL JEDI AND THAT LINE OF YARAEL’S IS IMMEDIATELY CONNECTED TO THE PREQUELS’ SITUATION:“Sometimes, unfortunately, [our ideals] come into conflict. We must always strive for peace, but also justice. Peace without justice is flawed, hollow at its core. It is the peace provided by tyranny.”And when the final vote goes to Jora Malli, she sums it up thusly: “Does the action I’m about to take bring more light to the galaxy?”Saving all those lives–whether under threat from the Nihil or the Separatists–is what the Jedi feel will bring more light to the galaxy. The High Republic Jedi Order is exactly on the same page as the prequels Jedi about this.I do love that this is also obviously a lot of shout-outs to KOTOR, but a lot of those are also shout-outs to the prequels Jedi, where the Jedi Order has existed for so long and will keep coming back, that the Force will always find a way to bring the Jedi back, no matter what happens, and that the Jedi may always face difficult decisions and sometimes they’ll choose differently, but here in Light of the Jedi and in Attack of the Clones, the Jedi choose to fight to protect people, to save billions of lives from those who would snuff them out just for personal gain, because that is what they believe will bring more light to the galaxy. You can see how they become that one step closer to being enmeshed with the Republic government, you can see how this ties to Lina Soh’s thoughts of how the Jedi are too useful, you can see how this ties to the Jedi believing that working with the system, working together is a good thing. You can see how all of this is the beginning of the set-up for how the Jedi’s faith in bettering the system, in being loyal because they want to help people, will eventually be turned against them. But you understand why they got there in the first place. -- source link
