ah yes, the moment you all have (probably) been expecting. ~angst time~ok so there’s kind of a lot to unpack here, since these are just various sketches based on different Specific things throughout Khalan’s story. I’ll put it all under a cut because it ended up getting a bit long lol the gist of the story is that while Khalan was being held captive at the mansion (briefly mentioned here), Mara had the intention of turning him into a Vindicator so she could control him like a puppet and keep him for herself. but Khalan is too stubborn and strong-willed, so even though Mara and the other Evokers had gone through with their magic ritual (by implanting a fragment of lapis lazuli into his forehead - yes, I took inspiration from that one statue in the mansion lol), Khalan was still able to hold onto enough of his own mind to prevent himself from completely turning into a Vindicator. so he’s in this weird state where Mara can still somewhat control him, but he’s also not entirely mindless and finds ways to resist her control.however, things change after Mel and Jimmy help him escape the mansion. Mara had been killed at some point in all of that, and she holds a grudge against Melvin and Jimmy for taking Khalan - as well as her own life. so she stalks them for a while as a ghost, unable to interact much while still in the Minecraft world. BUT. she eventually finds out that Melvin’s world is completely different.the shift into a more magical world gives Mara more power, and in turn she learns that, via the magical properties of the lapis, she is able to get inside of Khalan’s head and possess him. she tries to utilize this as a form of revenge against Jimmy and Mel, but fortunately they have ways to counter it, and slowly but surely (with the help of Melvin’s family), they work to loosen Mara’s possessive grip on Khalan for good.a bit of a longer explanation, but yeah. I kinda wanted to cram as much plot in here as possible so I’m not having to repeat myself a lot later. also, I know this is technically still a JN crossover story, but I guess Khalan is my new hyperfixation character at the moment… so I’ve been focusing a lot on his side of the story for that reason.
