bodleianlibs:As far as anyone can tell, it was on this day 200 years ago that Mary Shelley woke from her nightmare and declared:‘I’ve found it! What will terrify me will terrify others. I need only describe the spectre which had haunted my midnight pillow.’That spectre inspired her to write Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus. Pictured above is a sketch by Percy Shelley of Lake Geneva, where Mary was staying with both him and Lord Byron at the Villa Diodati. It was Byron who, on a stormy candlelit night, suggested that they each try and write a ghost story. We also have two volumes of Shelley’s draft of Frankenstein which you can leaf through for free on our website! -- source link
