This is a first limited edition of the Black Mother Goose Book, which was published by the Maryland Publishing Company in 1969. Arranged by Elizabeth Murphy Oliver and illustrated by Aaron Sopher, this book contains a collection of traditional nursery rhymes with illustrations of black children. Swahili vocabulary words are included in the book, too.Elizabeth Murphy Oliver was an important figure in Baltimore, where the book was published. She worked as a reporter, city editor, and columnist for the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper, where she reported on the major civil rights issues and events happening in the 1960s and 70s. Counting Martin Luther King, Jr. among her friends, Elizabeth Murphy Oliver made connections with other notable civil rights figures and received many awards for her work in journalism. It appears that the Black Mother Goose Book was the only children’s book she published. This book is part of our Margaret Coughlan collection.-Lauren Galloway, Archival AssistantSource:Rasmussen, Frederick N. “Elizabeth Murphy Oliver Abney, 85, editor.” The Baltimore Sun, 18 Aug. 1999, www.articles.baltimoresun.com/1999-08-18/news/9908180100_1_oliver-afro-elizabeth-murphy.
