The Magician’s Apprentice Upon hatching, baby octopuses are already equipped with a few chromatophores: special organs that give them their incredible powers of color-change and camouflage. The chromatophores of this young giant Pacific octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini) can be seen as brown flecks dotting its head and body. The little magician will need all the trickery and luck it can get. Surviving to adulthood in the big, bad ocean is no mean feat. There’s a reason mother E. dofleini can lay over a hundred thousand eggs at a time—very few of her babies will make it. Video source: Vancouver Aquarium Reference: Ortiz et al. 2006. -- source link
