The Williams Cleaner Bullet,Invented by Elijah D. Williams of Philadelphia during the American Civil War, the concept behind his cleaner bullet was that the bullet would clean out the muzzle as it was fired. The concave disk at the rear of the bullet would expanded when fired, hopefully scraping off any gunpowder residue in the process.Typically Union soldiers were issued one cleaner bullet to every ten minie balls. As the war progressed this ratio increased to 3 out of ten. While an interesting concept in theory, in reality the cleaning properties of the Cleaner Bullet were dubious at best. More importantly the Cleaner Bullet had terrible accuracy. As a result most were ditched by veteran soldiers who preferred to use regular minie balls. -- source link
