tomato-bird: “Tash the Inexorable, Tash the Jubiliant” I had the wonderful opportunity to talk on the Prophetic Imagination Station podcast about The Chronicles of Narnia: The Last battle, about the possibilities and limits of C.S. Lewis’ imagination, and about my favorite subject of note, the figure of Tash! In honor of the day I decided to try my hand at illustrating a Southeast Asian inspired Tash variant, which I’ve been referring to as “Tash the Jubiliant.” In this design, I was thinking about how I’ve mentioned that Calormene culture and worldbuilding in The Chronicles of Narnia is mostly a mishmash of perceived vaguely Indian and Arabic/Middle eastern or even older Mesopotamian imagery. And while this mishmash is mostly for kind of orientalist reasons I was thinking about various cultures which DO have multiple cultural influences due to various exchange, colonialism, or longer history over time, as well as how gods and mythological figures become transformed across geography. I wouldn’t be surprised if far away from the center of Tashbaan, there are various local or syncretic renditions of Tash that have variant symbolism or meanings to them!
