1991-1995 Anime PrimerThe Heroic Legend of Arslan (1991)Arslan, the crown prince of Pars, is faced with the monumental task of reclaiming his country after treachery leads to the defeat of his father’s forces against the nation of Lusitania. Aided by his loyal general Daryun, the youth embarks on a quest to drive out the Lusitanian zealots and defeat Silver Mask, an enigmatic foe who holds the king captive in order to fulfill a bitter vendetta. Fate and his own compassionate charisma win Arslan the support of unlikely allies, marking the beginning of a heroic legend that will be recounted throughout the ages…Based on the fantasy novels by Yoshiki Tanaka (Legend of the Galactic Heroes), The Heroic Legend of Arslan is a sweeping adventure story and political drama loosely inspired by Persian history, literature and mythology. This initial adaption, which was released theatrically and covers the first of sixteen volumes, reproduces the grandeur of the source material through ambitious hand drawn animation sequences that remain technically impressive to this day—in particular the opening battle scene and the ransacking of the Parsian capital. Sachiko Kamimura’s character designs are another highlight, a blend of her free-flowing style and the stately ornateness of Yoshitaka Amano’s original illustrations. Norihiro Tsuru’s stirring violin-based score and a veteran voice cast makes the film as much a treat for the ears as it is for the eyes. New viewers as well as those familiar with the more recent takes on Tanaka’s abidingly popular tale should relish this classic production. -- source link
