For this week’s Double Feature on the Criterion Channel, identities warp and merge in these studies of fractured female psyches. In Ingmar Bergman’s shape-shifting, penetrating chamber piece Persona (1966), an actress (Liv Ullmann) and her nurse (Bibi Andersson) seem to merge into one another as they spend time in a secluded house by the sea. There’s no question that David Lynch was influenced by Bergman’s masterwork when he conceived his own dreamlike vision of two women, Mulholland Dr. (2001), an aspiring actor and a mysterious amnesiac, whose identities also begin to ebb and flow as the story progresses. -- source link
