woozapooza:Hey guys, this is a poem I wrote about Desmond Hume and Penny Widmore as a modern Odysseus and Penelope! The first two lines of the poem are an exact translation of portions of the actual first four lines of the Odyssey (I just took out the stuff that doesn’t apply to our man Desmond). I tried to write the rest of it so that it would be accessible and engaging for anyone to read but much more rewarding if you’re familiar with both Lost and the Odyssey. At the same time, I thought it would be fun to sprinkle some Greek words in, so here’s a little glossary:- To bebaion literally means “the constant thing” or “the steadfast thing.” I don’t actually know how the ancient Greeks would express the concept of a mathematical constant, or if they even had a term for it. I just wanted to use a word that captures the same connotations as the English word “constant.”- Kleos aphthiton means “undying fame,” which all Homeric heroes seek.- Katabasis means “descent.” In a mythological context it refers to a journey to the underworld.- Aristeia means “excellence” or “prowess.” In an epic context it refers to a hero’s finest hour, which is traditionally when he basically goes berserk and kills a ton of people in battle.I hope you guys like it! -- source link
