ktshy:I’m absolutely broken hearted to hear of the passing of comic legend Jean Giraud, also known as “Moebius”. His beautiful surreal worlds have captivated my imagination since childhood and he’s been a big inspiration to me in my love for creating and reading comics. (If you’re unfamiliar with Moebius, this tumblr has a expansive collection of his illustrative work- NSFW) I’d discovered Moebius as a kid when my dad (a huge comic lover) gave me the first two volumes of The Magic Crystal*. Something about the art (partly the pretty ladies… and pointy hats) really caught my attention. I’d later find his stories in Heavy Metal magazine (sneaking up to the top shelf adult-only section of our comic library whenever my parents happened to leave the house). Though I didn’t understand everything that was happening in those stories (I think I still need to try ‘The Incal’ a few more times) they left an impression and sparked a fire in me that made me fall more in love the comic medium and excited for the giant ideas and world spanning stories you could tell panel to panel.*(I’m unsure now whether Moebius drew any of the art for “The Magic Crystal” or if it was all the work of his apprentice Bati? Either way, those books were my gateway to Moebius) This sad news hits me at the end of a storyboard all-nighter-marathon… so forgive me if I’m rambling a little, I should really go to sleep now… If I dream I hope there are giant birds soaring over strange landscapes, and that I’m riding one of them and wearing a pointy hat. Thank you, Moebius.I don’t think I can put into words how much of a loss he is to the art world. Moebius, you brilliant, dignified man.More on him here, here, and here. -- source link
