On 13 October, 2010, 9-year-old Anna Janatková from Prague, Czech Republic, never returned home from school that day. Almost immediately, her parents knew this was out of the ordinary and called the police. A missing child investigation was launched. Hundreds of people began to turn to the police after the publication of her photo, saying that they had seen Anna. Suggestions from citizens were reviewed, but there were no strong leads. Anna’s keys and backpack were discovered in a wooded area but the case went cold for some time. On 20 October, the police announced that they had arrested a suspect in Anna’s abduction. A trace of DNA, which was found on Anna’s backpack, led police to 41-year-old Otakar Tomek. Other than the DNA, there was no further evidence against Otakar and so he was freed. Five months later on 16 March, 2011, the remains of a child were found. The autopsy and the formal identification showed that they were, in fact, the remains of 9-year-old Anna Janatková. Her body was buried deep underground near where the police had found her keys and backpack after her disappearance. The police had searched that area many times before, however, it is believed that due to warm weather, the body became visibly exposed. After the discovery of Anna’s remains, the police arrested Otakar again and charged him with murder, rape and theft. After his arrest, he refused to testify and also refused to take a lie detector test. On 21 March, 2011, at Pankrác prison, Otakar Tomek attempted suicide by hanging. He was taken to hospital where he later died on 23 March, 2011. The prosecution of the suspect was stopped, but the investigation of the case continued until 29 April, 2011, when the case was closed completely. Despite his suicide, Otakar maintained his innocence throughout the entire investigation. -- source link
