atomicpowered:gutsyfrog:I’m gonna take advantage of the One Punch Man anime’s popularity to point out that ONE is a really underrated manga artist.Yes, I said “artist”, not “author” or “writer”. Granted he’s obviously not a technical master, even when he drops the scribbly, childish style and draws something more serious. But really, I’m not gonna use his occasional “normal” page to advertise him and instead draw attention to what makes his “objectively bad” art worthy of more respect.Though forsaking the traits that most people picture when they think of “good art”, he’s shockingly great at other, more underrated yet still quantifiable things: scene composition, paneling, use of negative space along with just general dynamism and visual inventiveness. There are plenty of artists that are great role models when it comes to anatomy, perspective and generally solid drawing; but, seeing as it cuts out the technical details, ONE’s art at its best is great if you want to figure out the purest essence of what makes for an appealing and fun illustration.Pages from One Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100 and Makai no Ossan.I don’t mean to hijack but this is a huge point I have been saying as well for years. I’m extremely happy ONE himself has gotten this large upswing in popularity from having two anime in such a short time as well as a best selling manga adaption by, in my pretty vetted opinion, one of the best manga artists working in japan right now. But lets visit the origin of ONE as an artist in his own right. He starts makai no ossan which gets it’s own publishing despite being a web based affair. Then after making OPM for a awhile the above big king artist wants to work with this guy. This webgen dude just doing stuff he finds fun despite having no training, he literally just decided one day that he wanted to do it. It’s because this guy murata isn’t just good at art, he’s good at the inherent rules of a visual medium. He realizes that one’s work is good from a storytelling standpoint, and it’s not just because ONE is a good writer. Like the above posts says, ONE is actually fantastic in almost all other areas of making a manga. Despite not being rock solid on a technical level, ONE creates so many moving and touching scenes in his manga where I am totally swept up in the mood that the manga is painting. Not to mention the comedic timing that reflects in the art. His art and framing is clear, easy to digest, and at it’s core, still really fantastic in it’s own way. Even murata fails sometimes, to capture the frantic energy and especially the dichotomy of the characters matched up to the background elements and set pieces. Because of the simplicity of the characters and their designs as well as the over all art, lots of things tend to have a lot more punch when they are displayed differently than the rest of the book. Yes it’s cool when something happens in murata’s version where 10/10 art goes to a 13 for a little bit. But honestly I see a lot of merit when something goes from a 2 to a 9 for a small spike. It tends to have much more of an impact over all, and makes you pause for just that extra second. Not to mention the difference between how elements are rendered on the same page. ONE completely understand how to use the ugly to his advantage where we see him shine in terms of monster design and his foray into scary scenes as well. He’s also incredibly good at making a situation tense or comical in a very short amount of time. Growing and breaking moods as he sees fit. All in all he’s a thoughtful type of creator who really enjoys examining characters, and importantly, the manga as a medium. OPM is all about breaking what it means to be a shonen character. Mob is an extension of that as well, but more character driven and more of the inverse of a lot of OPM’s messages. Just like mob lacks a lot of strength, and saitama has too much makai no ossan was about growing up, and making choices. All three have characters that break the mold in terms of where, powers and abilities wise, lots of characters would be at the end of their journey. ONE loves to unlock what happens to the people After they have all these world breaking abilities. I have a lot of stock in how the adaption of Mob is going to come out since it’s not based on murata’s versions but rather ONE’s original stuff. Right off the bat, looking at it I can see a totally wayyy more interesting approach to how the look and feel of this anime is going to come off. And if they do a good job I can see it blowing the already great OPM out of the water. -- source link
