snarkyastronomer: Captain Kirk for President? Please? I posted this back in February, when I had no idea how this year would unfold. In June, following the murders in the Pulse nightclub in the US and of MP Jo Cox in the UK within a few days of each other, I commented that I found it hard to see how the optimistic future promised by Star Trek was attainable. Now, following the shocking US election results - and the start of Jo Cox’s murder trial - I am thinking about this again. I’m reminded that even Star Trek, with perhaps the most optimistic future for humanity of any science fiction, did not predict that progress would go in a straight line; there were eugenics wars and the Romulan war before we got to the peaceful exploration of the 23rd century.I am an immigrant in the US and will most likely leave over the course of the next year. But our countries, and others too, face similar challenges in fighting violent, hateful rhetoric. I stand with everyone who feels marginalized and afraid. We must keep fighting for the future we believe in. -- source link
