EA Photo Essay: 7 days of a scientist (Day 3)Featuring @cyan-biologistAn intern needs to get enough knowledge of the organisms he’s working with, so I needed to practise dissecting, drawing and understanding shrimp anatomy. I practised on a shrimp that can be caught here locally called Palaemon longirostris, characterised by its long “nose”. Although I did not need to see the interior structures, I still needed to dissect the mouth area in order to inspect all mouthparts. Using a dissecting microscope and two very sharp tweezers I pulled off all six pairs of mouthparts. Drawing them sounded so easy given my hobbies, but using the “drawing arm” or Camera Lucida it was harder than it appeared to be. The arm consists of a mirror that projects your drawing onto the view through the oculars of the microscope. For entomology and carcinology, drawings are still a huge deal since photographs do not show hidden structures well enough.- - -EA Photo Essay is a series of photographic posts about interesting things featuring interesting people in the field of Earth science and natural history.
