gffa:Star Wars: Age of Rebellion - Darth Vader #1 | by Greg Pak & Ramón Bachs HERE’S WHY THIS WORKED FOR ME, WHEN IT COULD HAVE BEEN REALLY AWFUL: The thing about Darth Vader for me is that I am completely uninterested in him as a masculine power fantasy who you get is kind of bad, but you also secretly kind of want to be him. While there’s a lot of cool aspects to explore of him as this terrifying nightmare figure, through the eyes of how other people see him, how that mystique can be used incredibly well to show how horrifying he is, when you center a story on Darth Vader himself, when you’re giving us a look into who he is, he works a thousand times better when you realize just how fucking awful his life is.That ending up there? With all the other Imperials kneeling to him? That needs the context of everything that happened before it. It needs the context of Anakin Skywalker’s awful life, from his childhood as a slave, to his inability to listen to the Jedi, to his abusive relationship with Palpatine. It needs to show us that Vader can have all this power, he can appear to others as a nightmare, that he can survive things no one should survive, and it’s awful. It’s uncomfortable to watch Vader kneeling to Sidious’ hologram while Ahr is in the room. It’s deeply uncomfortable to watch the cruel glee crossing Ahr’s face when he realizes Vader is under him and he can do pretty much whatever he wants. It’s incredibly uncomfortable when Vader doesn’t have to say a word for us to know that he’s seething with hate and fury and pain, that Sidious deliberately evokes that in him and Ahr picks it up and runs with it.What could have been a straightforward FUCK YEAH THAT’S BADASS moment, when Vader follows Ahr’s instructions “to the letter” and it gets Ahr murdered in the way Sidious planned, what could have been BOW DOWN BITCHES when the Imperials are all terrified of Vader and kneel to him instead, reminds us precisely what Vader had to go through to get here.Yeah, he’s a nightmare on robot legs who goes out onto a battlefield and destroys it single-handedly. Those panels are incredible for just what a fucking murder machine Vader is! He’s goddamned unstoppable! But the bigger point of the issue is that he’s also abused by everyone around him and no amount of badassery can undo what Sidious does to him as punishment. Certainly we’re meant to remember that Vader was forced to kneel, that he’ll be forced to again in the future, no matter how many inconsequential Imperial officers kneel to him out of terror. No amount of nightmare on robot legs will ever wipe away that he was a slave as a child, that he betrayed his Jedi family, that Obi-Wan and Padme turned away from him, that Sidious only wants to hurt him. And that made this issue pretty damn stellar and my heart to hurt all over again for this murderous disaster lord. -- source link
