Don Juan PondHypersaline lakes exist all over the world. What makes this one unique though is its location. That, and the fact that it never freezes, despite temperatures that can hover around -50C (-58 F). The 1,000x 400m Antarctic Don Juan Pond, named for two US lieutenants among the first to study the pond in 1961, is almost twice as salty as the Dead Sea, and almost twenty times as salty as the world’s oceans. It is also the site at which “Antarcticite” was first found: the uncommon crystalline precipitate calcium chloride hexahydrate. Don Juan pond is located in Wright Valley, of Antarctica’s dry valleys, which host more hypersaline lakes, of which Don Juan is the saltiest. -BN Photo Credit: http://www.worldalldetails.com/Pictureview/4366-Natural_Phenomenon_Don_Juan_Pond_Antarctica_Closeup_view.htmlRecources:http://www.astrobio.net/pressrelease/3479/why-astrobiologists-love-don-juan-pondhttp://webmineral.com/data/Antarcticite.shtmlhttp://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/featured/lakes650ft-beneath-the-waves/2413http://www.eoearth.org/article/Don_Juan_Pond?topic=49560 -- source link
