Happy Friday! To celebrate the end of the week, I’ve found a Spock who understands how orbits work! After being thrown towards Earth by the black hole (because reasons), the Enterprise loses its warp engines and is maintaining orbit on impulse power. Normally, this would be the cue for me to jump in and rant about not needing power to stay in orbit, but in this case it actually makes sense! As Spock points out, this time they are too low in the atmosphere to stay in orbit. Since they are so low down (low enough to be spotted by a military plane), the ship experiences drag caused by friction with the particles in the atmosphere. This causes it to slow down, and if you slow down you will fall towards the planet and meet a very squishy end. After all the ranting I’ve done about the misuse of orbits in Star Trek, it makes me very, very happy to see it done correctly here. Thank you, Spock! -- source link
