otterintheflightdeck:鼠色 (Nezumi-iro) | #787D7B | “Mouse”Nezumi-iro covers a range of achromatic greys, from the pale 白鼠 (shiro-nezumi, “white mouse”) to the dark 消鼠 (keshi-nezumi, “dark mouse”). This color name dates back to the middle of the Edo period (1608-1868), when muted greyish or brownish colors became so popular that “the hundred greys of the Edo period” are mentioned in various texts. To differentiate between neutral nezumi-iro and other shades that were given -nezumi names, nezumi-iro was often called 素鼠 (su-nezu, “basic mouse grey”) or 中鼠 (naka-nezu, “middle mouse grey”).Another name for nezumi-iro is 御召鼠 (omeshi-nezu), because of an 11th-century shogun, Tokugawa Ienari, who liked to wear chirimen omeshi (high-quality crepe garments) of this color. Before being called nezumi-iro, this shade of grey was known as 鈍色 (nibi-iro, “dull color”), 橡 (tsurubami, “chestnut”, referring to the color produced by chestnut dye rather than the color of the chestnuts themselves), or 薄墨 (usu-zumi, “pale ink”).Although 灰色 (hai-iro, “ash”) also means “grey”, it usually refers to warm or slightly yellowish greys, while nezumi-iro covers achromatic and blueish greys.(Picture sources: 1, 2, 3 | More colors)Many thanks for this custom note :D I love nezumi, it is a very iki color (sadly quite associated with older people nowadays).I cross my fingers to learn more about the purple family now ;) (shikon, botan, murasaki etc) -- source link
