The Sand HillsThe largest expanse of wind deposited sand and dune topography in the western hemisphere is found in the sandhills of central Nebraska. Covering an area of 52,000 square kilometers (20,000 sq. miles), the sandhills make up one quarter of the state. This region has undergone several major episodes of dune formation over the last 13,000 years. The sand is stabilized by grasses and is much more prone to erosion during droughts. Scientists speculate that, at times in its history, the sandhills were a sea of blowing sand, similar to the Sahara desert of today. The region is vital to the health of the Ogallala aquifer as the porous sand can transmit precipitation to the underlying water table with great efficiency.KKSReading about sand hills:http://1.usa.gov/19SWC2LPhoto courtesy of Michael Forsberg -- source link
